“I’ve never seen such a heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in my entire existence”

On the night of the 15th of May 2023 residents of Ga-Mmotla in Hammaskral were showered by heavy rainfall accompanied by monsoon winds and the results of the rain were dire especially in Molebatsi Secondary School.

The wind blew away the roofs of some of the classes that are used for learning not to mention the water tanks that were used to store water in the school. According to the principal of the school, Mr. Nthite said “ We are fortunate that one of the classrooms was an extra class if it wasn’t the case we would be in great danger. Overall the children are safe”.

The school informed the department in a manner of letters due to this matter they came and assessed the situation and their response was that “They have a budget for the year with that being said the matter is a surplus and seeing that it’s extra classes the matter will be resolved in a relaxed manner”

The principal furthermore ensured the safety of the learners in his hands. The SGB had a meeting with the parents to inform them of this matter and one of the parents from the school Mavis (45) said “I have a child who is in grade 10 and I hope that no child goes in that classrooms until it’s cleared that they do so because we can’t risk the future as we know children are the future.”

One of the student shared with us that “It’s quite scary that a wind can do that but she hopes that no learners goes to that classroom as it’s still in ruins”. Concluding her statement she shared how sad she is that she cannot go there anymore to practice for her prepared speeches and reading aloud activities.
