Not all hope is lost for the youth unemployment rate
in South Africa as the Minister of Finance Mr. Enoch Godongwana has allocated
7.8 billion to appoint 5000 police trainees for 2023.
He announced this at the peak of his 2023 financial
year budget speech in parliament while he was briefing the media. He said that
the South African Police Service (SAPS) police trainee program was an
initiative specifically set to empower youth, fight crime and corruption within
the country.
The police traineeship will commence in April 2023
after the candidates have met all the requirements and passed the assessments
including psychometric, medical and physical fitness assessments.
“The process is still ongoing up until March, those who
are still waiting for the test must just be patient,” said Kgumza Moloi, one of
the police trainee applicants for this year.
He further added that psychometric is meant to test
the actual you, whether you have the qualities of a police officer. The
duration of the training including the induction, basic training and probation
phase is 24 months. Upon completing the program, the youth is equipped with
skills to prevent and investigate crime, maintain public order, protect and
secure the inhabitants of the country, and enforce the law.
Though there are claims of nepotism and corruption
within the South African Police Service when it comes to the recruitment of the
Police trainees, Richard sings praises to the programme. Richard Machogo Malope
a beneficiary of the Police Trainee program who is now a police officer said, “Thank
God for being with me throughout this journey, 24 January 2023 marks exactly 12
years in service.”
The program has received 517 000 applications across
all the police stations, with over 60 000 who have been assessed already.
